Looking for any green things to do in Abruzzo during your holiday? Because of its territory which is ⅓ covered by protected areas and natural reserves, the region is also known as “the Green Region”. The Cerrano territory too, where Silvi is, with Atri, Pineto and Roseto, is a place green-tourism lovers should visit in Abruzzo.
Here we suggest you some things to do to spend a green weekend in Silvi.
The Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano: a day among nature, culture and beach
From Silvi Alta: it will take 5/10 minutes by car to reach the Tower of Cerrano. You’ll have to leave your car in the park area, and reach the heart of the MPA by feet. You can also reach the Tower by e-bike or mountain-bike.
The first thing we suggest to do in Abruzzo is a visit to the Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano. Overlooking from the panoramic viewpoint of Silvi Alta you’ll be already able to see the Tower, nex to the sea. A long time ago, la Tower and our village were a system to alert each other when the pirates were coming from the waves to lead their rainds in our lands.
Today the Tower is the most known symbol of the Marine Protected Area, our Relais Borgo sul Mare is a friends of, having part in many actions for sustainable tourism.
This is actually a place to visit in Abruzzo: a protected sea, the history, the science. Guided visits of the park are comprehensive of the sea area, the sand dunes, the garden. In addition to these, you’ll have a guided tour of the Sea Museum (Museo del Mare), a little but very appreciated Museum.
And more: on the balcony of the Tower you can have a break and a coffee, breathing the sea breeze and looking to the waves and the greenery around. You can relax on the wild beach and dive into the sea in front of the Tower, keeping a eco-friendly attitude.
Other things to do in Cerrano? We suggest to enjoy the activities and the events the MPA organizes, such as snorkeling among the ruins of the ancient roman port, or listening to a good concert at sunrise.
The WWF Oasis of Calanchi di Atri: a walk among geological ages
From Silvi Alta: it will take 10 minutes by car. You can also reach the reserve by e-bike or mountain-bike.
The second thing to do in the territory of Cerrano in Abruzzo is a visit to the WWF Oasis of Calanchi di Atri: a panoramic ring that winds along the Abruzzo’s countryside and the majestic badlands. Badlands (in italian, calanchi) are geological structures, shaped by water during many millennia. They were the bottom of the sea a very long time ago, as shells and fossils suggest.
The reserve is now protecting many different animals and plants, and it’s rich in licorice. These root has been having a deep influence on Abruzzo economy for many years and you can taste it in many typical sweets.
After you visited the Oasis or enjoyed one of the many events the crew organise during summer, we recomend you other things to do in Abruzzo: let’s visit Atri. The duke town is rich in museums, old churches, roman ruins that tell its glorious history, that started even before the roman Age. Hatria was a loyal colony of Rome, becoming a rich marketplace leading a commercial port.
One thing you should not miss in Atri: the cathedral, that was built on the still visible roman baths. The walls are covered by very ancient frescoes, and it has a nice cloister and a museum that hiddens many unexpected treasures.
These places are in our history, but Abruzzo is full of parks and natural reserves, a perfect region for those who love green-tourism. Silvi Alta, with its panoramic balcony overlooking the sea, is the perfect place to start your journey, wherever you want to go.
