What to do in Italy in autumn? Summer came to its end, but you can still discover the history, the nature and the culture of Abruzzo region, for example. We tell you some tips having the old village of Silvi, on the coast, as a starting point.
The old village of Silvi Alta
Here you find our Relais Borgo sul Mare and the Ospitalità Diffusa. The first thing to visit in Silvi is the old village. It’s perched on a series of wall arches, on a hill in front of the sea. The most iconic place is the panoramic viewpoint. You can take a look from Gran Sasso to Majella mountains, and, on the sea, from Conero to Punta Penna.
The alleys of the village are very nice too. Their warm colors paint the village of Silvi. If you come to the village, stop and visit the shop Generi Diversi. It’s being on business since 1927, as the old license you can read on the wall states. You can buy some typical food and drink here.
The Museum of the Sea
From the village of Silvi, you can reach the Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano by car or by bike, if you’re trained. The Tower is in Pineto, but the protected area starts in Silvi Marina. Inside of the Tower, there’s a little but rich Museum of the Sea, very appreciated by both children and adults. The Museum tells the biodiversity of the park, but also the history of Silvi’s traditional fishery. The Tower was an old spanish fort, built in XV century as a part of a system of surveillance to protect the coast. So, what to do in Italy in autumn in Abruzzo? We really suggest a visit to Torre Cerrano.

Atri, the city of Arts
Very near from Silvi Alta, Atri is a city of Arts. It has a Theater, a middle age cathedral, the duke’s palace, the roman ruins and some museums. Atri has a very old history: it was a piceni village, then became a roman colony, asserting itself as a cultural and commercial node. In the modern age, it was a domain of the Acquaviva dukes. They had a key role in the politics of the time, not only in Atri: it’s enought to think that in the firts years of the XVII century Claudio d’Acquaviva was the general minister of the Jesuits. The so called Company of Jesus, in that period, had a huge political influence all around the world. If you love nature, Atri has a WWF Oasis with badlands too.

Pescara, the biggest city of Abruzzo
The most crowded city of Abruzzo is 10 minutes far from Silvi going by train, and you can easily reach it by car. Something we suggest to do in Italy in autumn if you’re in Abruzzo is a day in Pescara. The city has a modern skyline, renewed with some buildings as the Ponte del Mare (a bridge suspended on the sea, you can walk or cycle), the Flaiano Bridge and two Towers. In the Old Pescara, instead, you can visit che St. Cetteo Cathedral, the home of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio and, next to it, the Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo, that tells the traditions of our people. This area is also very appreciated for the movida.
The city center is full of life, even at night. It’s reserved to pedestrians, and it starts in front of the train and bus station. There are shops, restaurants, wineries, bars. This is the heart of the city. Also the promenade along the sea deserve your attention: many beach clubs have restaurants inside that keep open also during autumn and winter.

Food tourism in Silvi
Something else to do in Abruzzo during autumn is food tourism. Silvi has a seafood tradition based on the poorest fishes to make rich dishes. Some examples: the brodetto (a fish soup), the anchovies meatballs and the anchovies cutlets. But Abruzzo has also many meat dishes: arrosticini (grilled sheep skewers), cac’ e ove (a casserole of lamb meat with eggs and cheese), pecora alla callara (a spicy sheep stew) are the most iconic. Our cheese is so good: in Atri, for example, the typical pecorino di Atri is produced. Also the regional wines deserve a mention, and we’ll tell you more about this in our next blogpost.
Abruzzo’s pasta is fantastic. Everybody like timballo (a kind of lasagna), chitarra con le pallottine (chitarra spaghetti with very little meatballs and tomato sauce) and scrippelle ‘mbusse (crepes in broth).
It’s important to taste some other delicacies. Pizzonde (fried pizzas), fried peppers with egges, pallotte cace e ove (vegetarian meatballs made with egges and cheese, then fried and covered with tomato sauce), ventricina (two different kinds, from Teramo and from Vasto) etc. Finally, the dessert. Our sweets are often filled by the typical black grapes jam. Taste bocconotti (two recipes, from Teramo and Castel Frentano), neole (also called ferratelle or cancellate, depending on the area of the region).
